Neighborhood Garage Sale – November 4 (RAIN or SHINE)

This year the Whiffletree V, VI, VII Neighborhood Garage Sale will be held on November 4, 2023 (RAIN or SHINE). Before that day, WHOA will put up a banner indicating the neighborhood garage sale is happening. This is a good time to clean out unwanted items and have a garage sale when others in the neighborhood are having garage sales at the same time. To participate, have a garage sale on November 4, 2023. Sometimes, neighbors will combine their sales together, which makes it a little more fun!

Each household is responsible for their own garage sale permit. Click the following link to the City of Plano website for information about holding a garage sale in Plano, https://ecop.plano.gov/GarageSales/default.aspx. We have put up posts on various websites that advertise garage sales. When you apply for a garage sale permit with City of Plano, your garage sale will be added to a map indicating homes that are having sales. No other advertising is needed!

Tips to Help Get Ready for a Garage Sale

Here are some tips that may help you in getting ready for a garage sale.

  • Make an inventory list of what you want to sell
  • Group items that can be put in a box and sold at a general price, like books or toys.
  • Get price stickers (you can find these at an office supply store)
  • Get or make signs - see the City of Plano website above for rules about signs.
  • Decide how you are going to display items - do you need tables? Will everything be on the driveway?
  • Get cash for change: $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills, and maybe a roll of quarters.
  • You may consider using a payment service like Venmo in addition to cash.
  • Have shopping bags or cardboard boxes on hand to help people carry their goods

What to Do with Unsold Items

The 2023 Texas Recycles Day is on November 11. It is held in the Chase Oaks Church parking lot. This is a great way to donate items you didn't sell at your garage sale. For more information, see https://www.plano.gov/649/Texas-Recycles-Day. For other recycling events in Plano, check this site: https://www.plano.gov/1002/Community-Recycling-Events.

Introducing "Notable Neighbors"

Whiffletree HOA is excited to announce a new publication called, Notable Neighbors, where we produce articles about Whiffletree history and our residents. Two Whiffletree neighbors, Kelly Paschalis and Kim Stockberger, have volunteered to write the articles, and the first one is titled, The Legend of Langley Drive, which describes the genesis of the incredible Halloween celebration on Langley Drive and Langley Court.  I invite you to read the story about the modest beginnings of Halloween on Langley and how it grew into the gem it is today.  You can read this article and any future articles by clicking on the new Notable Neighbors tab that appears in the menu bar on our website.

We are planning future articles for Whiffletree Notable Neighbors.  We have residents who have unique stories large and small; stories in business, academics, sports, charity, parenting, hobbies… If you know someone (or are someone!) who has an interesting story to tell, please don’t be shy.  Send me a note using the CONTACT US page of our website and you or someone you know could be featured next.  Thank you!

National Night Out (NNO) Recap from October 3, 2023

National Night Out is an annual event established to enhance the relationships neighbor-to-neighbor and with law enforcement; and was held at Prairie Meadow Park on Tuesday, October 3. As we have done in the past, we invited our friends from Estates of Forest Creek (EFC). In total we hosted over 100 neighbors from Whiffletree and EFC. Everyone enjoyed the delicious ice cream from Henry’s.

We were honored that Mayor, John Muns, and Police Chief, Ed Drain, joined us.  They both spoke to all the attendees and then spent a significant time speaking with many individual neighbors.

We sincerely thank Mayor Muns and Chief Drain for spending time with Whiffletree and EFC neighbors.  We also, want to thank City of Plano for providing these and other photos of Whiffletree HOA, which we have saved onto the Whiffletree website.

Annual Peanut Butter Drive (September 1-30)

The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) annual Peanut Butter Drive ends on Saturday, 9/30.  We are hoping that Whiffletree neighbors will generously support this event as you have in the past.  If you have already made a contribution, Thank You!!!

Last year our neighborhood-wide donation was 4,783 pounds of peanut butter (actual peanut butter or alternative products and monetary donations).  This resulted in Whiffletree donating the most PB per household of any neighborhood in Plano and being recognized as the “Nuttiest Neighborhood in Plano” by Mayor, John Muns, at the NTFB Peanut Butter Drive review.

You can make secure financial donation by clicking on the following link: https://give.ntfb.org/site/TR?team_id=3701&pg=team&fr_id=1170.

Alternately, you may deliver actual peanut butter or alternative nut butters, such as almond butter, to the home of Debbie & Tommy Mrazek at 7325 Paul Calle Drive.  You can also drop off cash or a check at the Mrazek’s home payable to WHOA.  We will accumulate all the cash and check donations and make one donation to NTFB Peanut Butter Drive on behalf of Whiffletree neighbors. As in previous years, your generous donations will be greatly appreciated.

Plano Neighborhood Fitness Competition (Oct. 1-31)

Plano Neighborhood Fitness Competition is scheduled to run October 1-31.  Whiffletree has won this event for all three years.  We want to retain our title as Fittest Neighborhood in Plano.  You can participate if you run/jog, walk, swim, do Pilates, Zumba, dance or exercise with weights or bands. You record your activity on the corporatefitness app for the competition by selecting the type of activity and either length of time or distance.  The app then converts this input into points.  The neighborhood with the highest average points per entrant at the end of October is the winner.  The steps to sign up for this competition are:

  1. Sign up at https://airtable.com/appdjvtPcPSynlcM6/shrzR3K2ip2u88nNo where you enter your name, address, email, neighborhood (enter Whiffletree V, VI, VII) and answer a couple of other questions.
  2. Plano Neighborhood Services plans to send out the emails from corporatefitness app on Friday, September 29th to those that registered. You start recording activity on October 1.
  3. People who participated in the competition last year, should be able to use the same username/password they had previously. There is a way to reset if you forgot it.
  4. Plano Neighborhood Services plans to send out email next week to all those who registered with more information.

If you want to get a chuckle, you can view short video that Plano Neighborhood Services is using to hype this event on social media.  https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxOCHFkLKYV/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D.

Thanks to the other Whiffletree neighbors that participated in the making of the video.

National Night Out (NNO) at Prairie Meadow Park on Tuesday, October 3 at 6:00 PM

Whiffletree will host the annual National Night Out on Tuesday, October 3 at 6:00 PM at Prairie Meadow Park, next to Mathews Elementary School.

National Night Out is a community-building event that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, and better places to live.  Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Mayor, John Muns, and Police Chief, Ed Drain, plan to join us at NNO as they did last year.  Along with City of Plano leaders, we expect several Plano Police Officers will also attend.  We invite all Whiffletree neighbors to join us in this event.

Henry’s ice cream treats will be available for all attendees so come on out to National Night Out on Tuesday, October 3 at 6:00 PM, meet your neighbors as well as City of Plano leaders and several Plano Police officers who protect us.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Plano Neighborhood Fitness Competition (Oct. 1-31)

Whiffletree has won the annual Plano Neighborhood Fitness Competition all 3 times since its inception in 2020 and we want to again be crowned Fittest Neighborhood in Plano.  One change this year is that the competition will be held in October as opposed to previous years which held this in November.

September 13, a video will be created to promote this and YOU CAN BE IN THE VIDEO

To build some excitement in this competition across the City of Plano, Plano Neighborhood Services will be doing a social media push.

  • This will include creating a video which is planned for Wednesday, 9/13, at Prairie Meadow Park.
  • They are asking individual winners from last year as well as Whiffletree participants (as overall team winner) to be at the park 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, 9/13, to make this video and to "hype up" the competition.
  • So if you participated in last year’s competition or plan to participate this year, come to Prairie Meadow Park next to Mathews to be part of the video as defending champions.
  • If you have your t-shirt from winning last year’s competition, please wear it.

So, I am asking as many Whiffletree neighbors as possible to come to Prairie Meadow Park Wednesday (9/13) at 11:30 AM to participate in the video.  I certainly understand if your work or family schedule prevents your participation but would love a large turnout.

Let me know if you plan to beat Prairie Meadow Park on Wednesday for the video in case weather causes a reschedule.

Annual Peanut Butter Drive (September 1-30)

Get ready, we are approaching the start of North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) annual Peanut Butter Drive, which kicks-off Friday, September 1, and runs for the entire month.  These past few years have been extremely challenging for many families to put food on their tables.  We are hoping that Whiffletree neighbors will generously support this event as you have in the past.  Last year our neighborhood wide donation was 4,783 pounds of peanut butter (actual peanut butter or alternative products and monetary donations).  This resulted in Whiffletree donating the most PB per household of any neighborhood in Plano and being recognized as the “Nuttiest Neighborhood in Plano” by Mayor, John Muns, at the NTFB Peanut Butter Drive review.

Whiffletree Person of the Month - Help Wanted

Are you (or a member of your family) interested in the field of reporting/journalism or creative writing, or studying in any of these fields?  Are you looking for opportunities to practice your interviewing and writing skills or just get to know and report on some of the fantastic people that live in Whiffletree?  If so, we would love your assistance in writing stories about some of the interesting and accomplished neighbors in Whiffletree.

The objective of this project would be to periodically produce a story about a Whiffletree neighbor, which would involve interviewing that person and writing a brief story for publication on the Whiffletree website and emailing to Whiffletree neighbors.  We are so fortunate that we have so many neighbors in Whiffletree from varied backgrounds that have made significant contributions to their family, community, our nation and/or the world.  I know many Whiffletree neighbors would appreciate learning about some of the special people that live in our neighborhood that have lived fascinating and significant lives.

As part of this project, we would also ask fellow Whiffletree neighbors to recommend or nominate person(s) to be considered for person of the month.  We have over 1,000 neighbors living in Whiffletree, and it would be hard for any one person to know everyone and their background.  We would love to hear suggestions from across the neighborhood.

If you or someone in your family might be interested in undertaking this project, please contact me.  We would love the assistance.  Thank you

Jim Skelly
Whiffletree HOA President

Plano Road Construction Plans from April 4, 2023 Annual Board Meeting

At Whiffletree HOA Annual Meeting held on April 4, we were joined by Carrie Jones, Assistant Director of Plano Department of Public Works (DPW), responsible for Streets, Traffic and Construction.  Ms. Jones’ presentation included information about Plano roadway conditions and plans to remediate.  This included information and current timetable to overlay asphalt onto major roads in Plano.

The thin asphalt top layer extends the life of the roads and defers road repair, thereby saving costs.  Ms. Jones presentation also included information about major construction projects across Plano, including projects nearby Whiffletree.

I recommend you review this presentation. It is very informative. CLICK HERE to view the presentation.

WHOA ANNUAL Board Meeting – April 4 at 7PM via Zoom

During the meeting, we will address the following issues:

  1. Vote for WHOA Board for fiscal year 2023-2024 (April 1, 2023-March 31, 2024). The proposed WHOA Board slate presented by the current Board is:
    • President: Jim Skelly
    • Vice President: Tommy Mrazek
    • Secretary: Lisa Kravitz
    • Treasurer: Bill Ostergren

    • Crime Watch Committee Chair: Tom Moore
    • Membership Committee Chair: HB Bartz

This ballot will be presented at the annual meeting for Whiffletree neighbors to vote.  Prior to the annual meeting and during the annual meeting, additional nominations will be accepted for all offices.  You may email any nominees prior to the meeting to [email protected]. Any nominee must live in Whiffletree and be current on WHOA dues.  The same dues payment requirement applies to all neighbors that want to vote in the election.  Note that only one vote is allowed per household.  Nominees that receive a simple majority of votes for the particular office shall be duly elected to that office and will serve for one year, until March 31, 2024.

  1. Review of financial statement for fiscal year 2022-2023, ending March 31, 2023, as well as proposed budget for fiscal year 2023-2024 (April 1, 2023-March 31, 2024). A motion will be made to approve the proposed budget for neighbors to vote.
  2. Committee Chairperson reports on activities during last fiscal year as well as plans for this coming year.

Following the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting, we will host Carrie Jones, Assistant Director, Plano Department of Public Works (Streets/Traffic/Construction), who will deliver a presentation about ongoing street rehabilitation projects throughout Plano.  This will include Plano’s pavement management program, which will also cover the asphalt overlay projects that we have seen on several of Plano’s major roads.  This will be a great opportunity to receive an update on current and upcoming road construction projects in Plano and to ask Ms. Jones questions.

Whiffletree neighbors are invited to attend the meeting and to ask questions during this meeting.  We want to hear your thoughts, comments, and suggestions.  If you have any questions about this meeting, feel free to reach to me at [email protected].  Thank you for your support of your neighborhood.

Please Vote - Are you FOR or AGAINST short-term rentals?

Overview (We need your input) ...

A home in the Whiffletree neighborhood was purchased with the intent to rent/lease this property on a short-term basis via Airbnb.  Many neighbors expressed opposition to short-term rentals; therefore, Whiffletree HOA (WHOA) worked with an attorney to draft an amendment to the Whiffletree Restrictive Covenants to prohibit short-term rentals/Airbnb.  In order to adopt the amendment that will restrict short-term rentals/Airbnb, 75% of the homes in Whiffletree must vote to approve the amendment.  This email includes instructions on how to submit your vote online.

CLICK HERE to review the Amendment that is being proposed. If you have questions regarding this, please contact Jim Skelly at 214-505-0862 or [email protected].

You may be interested in reading a short article on Short-Term Leases that was published in the Dallas Morning News on 2/28/23.

Note that Whiffletree HOA automatically logs each vote in the appropriate subdivision (Whiffletree V, VI, or VII) since the vote is tallied by neighborhood subdivision.

On January 23, Whiffletree neighbors came together for our Winter Social at Napoli’s Italian Restaurant at NE corner of Independence and McDermott.  With almost 100 neighbors attending, we all had the opportunity to renew friendships and create new ones.  The team at Napoli’s did a great job providing delicious food.

All dues paying neighbors were invited to Winter Social, which has been a very popular event in Whiffletree for many years.  It was great to be able to hold it again this year.

Whiffletree Announces First Dues Increase in Over 20 Years

In the upcoming fiscal year (FY23-24) starting April 1, we ask for your financial support by paying the annual dues. The annual dues have remained at $120 ($125 recently implemented for online payments) for more than 20 years and compare favorably with nearby neighborhoods, which range from $150-200/year.

In upcoming fiscal year 2023-2024, we will need to increase annual dues because of inflation that has impacted costs across the board, including water, electricity, and landscape labor & materials to maintain our entrances, and food for the social events.  Whiffletree HOA has seen the same cost increases as you.  These higher costs created a substantial deficit this past year. Fortunately, we have a reserve that absorbed this deficit.

In our planned budget for FY 2023-2024, we need income & expenses to balance; therefore, WHOA board voted to increase the annual dues to $145 by check ($150 for website payments due to the added cost for online processing fees).

We hope you understand this needed action and continue to support your neighborhood, Thank you
